Naomi Kawase – Embracing / Katatsumori

This program combines two films of the Japanese film director Naomi Kawase. Many of her early works have been autobiographical documentaries. In 'Embracing' she tried to find answers to fundamental questions. Why do I exist? Who am I? This early film by the director revolves around the search for her father, whom she never knew because he left when she was little. Kawase combines home movies and handheld footage of her surroundings, but she also points to the camera at herself. The overlapping projected images of her face as she desperately searches for her identity are particularly powerful. 'Katatsumori' is a poignant portrait-film of the great-aunt who adopted her, and of their intimate bond.

Naomi Kawase (*1969) studierte Film an der Universität für visuelle Künste in Osaka. Während des Studiums und auch nachdem sie es 1989 beendet hatte, realisierte sie zunächst experimentelle Kurzfilme und Dokumentarfilme, die sich mit dem Thema Familie auseinander setzen. Zu allen ihren späteren Spielfilmen, die vielfach in Cannes präsentiert wurden, verfasst Kawase die Drehbücher stets selbst.
